Quality Improvement

Merseyside Anaesthetic Group for Improving Quality (MAGIQ)

MAGIQ is a regional QI network where enthusiastic trainees doing QI and audit can share and promote their work. We also closely work with RAFT with national projects. There are lots of opportunities to get involved and work together on great projects. Please see our website for aims and structure of the group and projects and ideas to date:

MAGIQ is a collaborative project for all Mersey anaesthetic trainees. Anyone can participate- as much or as little as they able. If you want to get involved with MAGIQ or one of the projects, or have any ideas, questions, or suggestions then please get in touch via email at merseymagiq@gmail.com

Mersey Anaesthetic Trainees for Environmental Sustainability (MATES)

MATES is a trainee collaborative seeking to reduce the environmental impact and encourage safe, effective and sustainable practice.  It was founded by Drs Tom Colville, Charlotte Berwick and James Holmes in 2021 in response to the climate crisis and a desire to align our personal ethics with our work in order to bring about change.

We have undertaken two major projects across the deanery so far:

1. DESTIVA (Delivering Environmental Sustainability Through Informed Volatile Awareness) - This project assessed the carbon footprint of general anaesthetics at most hospitals in the region and won the GASP conference poster award in 2021 and LSA Trainee prize in 2022.

2.  First Line Laryngoscopy Use in the Mersey region - Data was collected at 10 hospitals to evaluate first line laryngoscopy use and to ascertain barriers to VL as first line which is likely to be clinically and environmentally superior. This was presented at the DAS conferences in 2023.

We are always looking for new members who have an interest in sustainability. Please email merseymates@gmail.com if you would like to be added or have any ideas you would like to discuss.
